Where Do Raccoons Live?

raccoonsOne of the more mysterious animals which live among humans, raccoons are rarely seen by most people due to their nocturnal habits. And since they fear humans, if caught, they are far more likely to run away with their tails between their legs than stay close and be seen. As such, not many people know exactly why raccoons are such scavengers, as much of their nature comes down to where and how they live most of their lives.

One misconception about the living habits of raccoons is that they live in the sewers in big cities. While it is true that racoons are frequently found in sewers, it is not to live there, but rather as a means of travel and a place to potentially find food as well. Due to the compact nature of city life, many raccoons will live further away from the city and use the sewer system to travel at night in search of food in the densely populated areas. Logically, this makes sense, because sewers are not very nice places to live, even for a raccoon.

So, the question remains: where do raccoons live? The answer is they will live and sleep in dens pretty much anywhere natural and inhabitable for them. Raccoons prefer to live in hollowed out logs or trees when possible, as the tough bark provides nice protection from the weather of the outside world. As with their feeding habits, though, raccoons are more about opportunity than luxury, and are not picky about finding other places to live as well.

Raccoons are also excellent climbers, which makes trees their most popular choice. While one might think of squirrels as the type of creature which lives high up in trees, raccoons are more than happy to climb a tree to find a suitable home. Where they get into trouble is when their search for living quarters brings them into human homes and dwelling places.

Abandoned cars, attics, accessible holes in homes, barns, sheds, shacks, and tents are all possible living spaces for raccoons, all depending on the opportunity. Barns and sheds are their more popular choices, as they can be sheltered from the outside world without having to deal with the threat of humans more often than not. If the building is decrepit or falling apart, it doesn’t matter to raccoons, as all they care about is simply the opportunity of finding a place to spend the night.
