The holiday season is here and everyone is excited to fill their homes with decorations and lights to celebrate the season. Holiday decorations are great additions to the home, but because most of them come from nature, they can attract some unwanted guests as well. Here are five holiday decorations that attract pests!

Christmas Tree

A live Christmas tree is one of the most standard holiday decoration pieces but is also a huge bug magnet. There’s a good chance that there are already a few pests hiding out in the tree on the way home.

To minimize the number of bugs that get into your home through your tree, thoroughly shake out the tree before bringing it into your home. Once inside, inspect it once more and vacuum any additional bugs that you see.

Floral Decorations

Mistletoes and poinsettias are great decorative details to add to your home this holiday season. While these festive plants add an element of romance to your decor, they also bring in some unwanted pests as well. Just like your Christmas tree, be sure to inspect these plants thoroughly before hanging them in your home.

Wreaths

You may not think wreaths can bring pests in because they are on the outside of the door. However, every time you open your front door, there is the possibility of the pests running inside.

You can invest in a wreath that doesn’t contain any natural elements to reduce the amount of pests it will attract. However, if you prefer natural elements, be sure to shake out your wreath every so often to get rid of any pests that may be inside.

Gingerbread Houses

These sweet treats make for a tasty dessert or colorful holiday decorations! Your gingerbread house is sure to attract the attention of guests, but also attracts sugar-seeking bugs. To prevent insects from raiding your gingerbread house, wrap it up at night time and place it in the fridge until the next day.

Pine Cones

Pine cones are used as an earthy holiday decoration, creating a nice aroma inside of the home. Collecting your decorative pine cones from the great outdoors can help save some money, but can also bring in pests.

An easy trick for getting rid of pests and sap from pine cones is to bake them in the oven for about 45 minutes at 250 degrees Fahrenheit
