Keep a clean space. 

Rodents and other pests tend to prefer dirty spaces when it comes to shelter. An unkempt area offers easy access to food sources, water, and other nesting materials. 

For this reason, keeping a clean office space is necessary for staying rodent-free. All surfaces should be wiped down at the end of the day to remove food and drink traces. Depending on foot traffic and usage, offices should be regularly vacuumed on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. 

Garbage cans are one of the first places a rodent will go in search of food. Even the tiniest amount of food will attract the rodent. If possible, all garbage cans should be emptied at the end of every day. The trash should be removed from the office building and placed in an outside dumpster that is hopefully situated far away from the building. 

Minimize food exposure. 

Not only is eating lunch at your desk unhealthy, but it also serves to attract mice and other rodents. If you do plan on eating at your desk, be sure to leave no crumbs or leftovers – these are an open invitation to hungry rodents. 

Use sealed plastic containers when storing food or snacks in the office. These air-tight containers will prevent rodents from smelling the food or gaining access, and will keep your workspace rodent-free. 

If your office has a kitchen, keep all food stored away in the refrigerator, cabinets, and drawers. Never leave food out in the open on countertops or tables.

Remove standing water.

Much like humans, rodents and other pests require water to survive. Office buildings with easily accessible sources of water are prime locations for rodents to use as shelter. 

These water sources might be obvious, such as sinks or water fountains. But it can also mean leaks within the plumbing system that causes water to pool under false floors or on false ceilings.

Rodents are very nimble creatures, which means they can climb on any surface or navigate through the tiniest of cracks.
