How To Properly and Humanely Trap Mice and Rats

Some individuals have no problem co-existing with mice and rats – some even keep domesticated rodents as pets. But for others, finding mice and rats in your home can be extremely disturbing and frightening.

Use humane methods of trapping.

While using deadly mouse traps might seem like the best method for eradicating mice and rats, this is entirely false. Not only do live traps give these creatures a second chance at life, it is also the best way to completely deter rats.

Killing mice and rats does nothing to solve the root problem: how the rodents are getting into the building. Once the building is completely rat-proof, then all mice and rats inside should be live-trapped and released into the wild.

Trapping and killing the creatures only allows for more mice and rats to find their way inside to create more havoc and damage.

If you are looking to get rid of the rats in your home or office, there are a wide array of live mouse traps to choose from.

Aside from store-bought live traps, there is also a wide variety of homemade traps, including bucket traps, swinging lid traps, or shoebox traps.

Place the traps in highly frequented areas.

For the best results, place the live traps along the walls near the areas most frequented by the mice and rats. The easiest way to determine highly frequented areas is by looking for rodent droppings.

Mice and rats are skittish creatures, which means they will travel the same paths over and over again within a specific area. By targeting these paths, you have the best chance of successfully trapping the creature.

Check the trap hourly.

When using live traps, be sure to check the traps at least every hour. This will allow for the best chance of survival for the rodents.

Despite their small size, mice and rats have a voracious appetite. If the creatures are left in the traps for too long, they will become extremely hungry, thirsty, and frightened, which might lead to death.

Live traps should be disabled or removed when not in use or when you are not at home. This will prevent any mice and rats from getting trapped for hours and unnecessarily suffering.
