Last week, we discussed the numerous ways in which homeowners can prevent wildlife infestations during the winter. This week, the Shumaker team wanted to take a moment to share our tips on helping and caring for animals that visit your property in the upcoming months.
Wild animals rely on scavenging throughout the year, but this can be difficult during the winter when food is scarce. If you are looking for ways to help wildlife thrive, and do not mind the company, follow these helpful tricks.
Designate an area in your yard.
Rather than leaving your entire yard open, you can designate a specific area for wildlife usage. This can be accomplished by letting the area become overgrown, or constructing piles of leaves or wood. The undisturbed wild area will provide the perfect spot for animals to seek shelter and warmth.
Keep your bird-feeders full.
Birds depend on berries, fruit, worms, insects, and other natural food sources to survive – all of which are hard to come by during the cold season. By placing bird-feeders around your yard, you are not only serving to help birds, but also other small animals such as squirrels, raccoons, opossums, and deer.
In addition to bird seed, you could provide an assortment of nuts, fruits, and berries, as well as table scraps. This includes apples, peanuts, and pears, cheese, potatoes, beans, and almonds.
Provide fresh water.
In addition to bird feeders, another great addition to your yard is a birdbath. This will provide all types of creatures with clean and fresh water, an amenity that is not always readily available during the winter. It is important to remember to thoroughly clean your birdbath on a regular basis – about 2 to 3 times a week.
If you have a small body of water on or near your property that tends to freeze over, you can benefit wildlife by breaking the ice. To do so, place a pot of hot water on the surface to allow a small area of the ice to melt through. Remember to never pour hot water directly onto the ice.
Melting the ice not only helps creatures on land, but also helps the aquatic animals living within the body of water.
