How To Protect Your Animals During Hunting Season

With hunting season in full effect, it is the perfect time to educate pet owners about the ways they can protect their animals.

hunting season

Many individuals live near a hunting area, go hiking with their dogs, and let their cats roam outside. But these simple things can be extremely dangerous, especially if a hunter mistakes your dog or cat for another wild animal.

That is why it is important to always follow these safety tips to protect your animals during hunting season.

Wear Bright Colors

Anytime your animal is outside, whether they are alone or with you, they should be outfitted with bright colors or reflective gear. A reflective vest, collar, or harness are all great options for high visibility.

If you are ever outside without access to this gear, tying a piece of brightly colored fabric or clothing around your animal will also work. It is also a good idea for pet owners to wear bright clothing when outside with their animals – this will alert nearby hunters that it is not safe to fire.

Keep Pets On A Leash

Anytime your pet is off your property or outside of the fence, it should be on a leash.

Even the best trained dog or cat might run away from its owner in chase of a wild animal. If this happens, a hunter might accidentally hit your pet when aiming for the wild animal, or worse, mistake your pet for a deer or rabbit.

Aside from the possibility of getting injured or killed, it is important to keep your pet on a leash to prevent them from getting lost. If you live near a hunting area, your animal might become spooked and run away at the sound of gunfire. The leash will allow you to control the animal and prevent any harm from occurring.

Avoid Hunting Areas

If possible, the best way to protect your pets is by avoiding hunting areas altogether during hunting season. Rather than walking in the woods, check out local dog parks or take a walk around the neighborhood.

If your property borders hunting areas, or you live in close proximity, always make yourself known to hunters in the area by playing music, wearing bells, or whistling. If you hear gunshots while outside in a hunting area, be sure to shout and yell let the hunters know you and your pet are there.

Another great reason to avoid these areas during hunting season is the dangers of dead wild animals. Never let your pet eat or play with an animal carcass – it could be carrying diseases that are harmful or even deadly to pets.
