How To Keep Rabbits Out of Your Yard

Rabbits rely on vegetation for nearly all aspects of life, including food and shelter. Unfortunately, this means rabbits can create big problems if they find their way into your yard.

Rabbits Out of Your Yard

These hungry creatures will dine on all the grass and plants in an area until there is nothing left. To prevent this, homeowners can employ these humane tactics to keep rabbits out of your yard.

Natural Deterrents

It might come as a surprise to learn that rabbits are not fond of all plants. In fact, there are certain plants and smells that work to keep rabbits away from your yard and property.

Rabbits have an excellent sense of smell, which means plants with strong odors will act as deterrents. This includes daffodils, sage, asparagus, rosemary, onions, lemon, garlic, marigolds, lavender, and thyme.

These plants can either be placed around the perimeter of your yard, or next to other plants that rabbits would be interested in.

Plant Protection

One of the most effective tricks to keeping rabbits out of your yard is by protecting your plants and trees. If rabbits do not have access to food sources, they will quickly move on to a new area.

If you are looking for a way to maintain your picturesque yard, try using a thin netting material. The inconspicuous, lightweight material is great for deterring rabbits, without crushing your flowers or vegetable plants. Or if you need something more heavy-duty to keep the rabbits at bay, chicken wire and garden fabric are also effective choices.

During the winter months, when fresh vegetation is scarce, rabbits will resort to eating the bark of trees. To prevent your trees from becoming rabbit food, consider investing in tree guards. Tree guards are plastic or metal collars that wrap around the base of a tree to prevent damage.

Remove Cover

As with all animals, rabbits have a natural instinct of self-preservation. When searching for places to eat, they will most likely choose the area that provides the most cover from predators and other danger.

In an effort to deter rabbits from their yard, homeowners should remove all sources of shelter and eliminate areas they can hide in. Shrubs, bushes, and tall grass should be trimmed

regularly. Brush piles, rock piles, hollow logs, and weeds should also be kept to a minimum. The more open a yard is, the less inviting it is to rabbits and other destructive creatures.
