While Southern Maryland is very populated with people, it also houses a lot of animals too! From areas of the Chesapeake Bay to parts of Prince George’s counties, there are a lot of wildlife and pests included, roaming around. Take a look at some of the top Maryland pests that may be closer than you think.

Top Southern Maryland Pests

Skunks

Maryland is known to be the home of two types of skunks. These skunks are the common Striped Skunk and the rare Spotted Skunk. Even though one is less common than the other, these guys love to scour Southern Maryland for their food and shelter. They tend to eye up homes made from porches, sheds, and any other type of hidden space for them to live. The best way to deter them from possibly making it onto your property is to make sure there isn’t any food or trash that could bring them closer to your house.

Rodents

We grouped these guys all in one category because they are just a pain in general. We’re talking about rats, mice, gerbils, and guinea pigs. While the usual pest issues are attributed to squirrels, snakes, and raccoons, rodents make up a big part of the pest problem. Rodents tend to like more hidden spaces that are lower to the ground like a pile of rocks or bricks, firewood stacks, and random debris. When rodents invade homes, they are looking for food. Unless you are comfortable using safe traps for the smaller rodents, leave the capturing to the professionals.

Raccoons

Surprisingly, raccoons can be found throughout Southern Maryland. They don’t tend to gravitate towards one type of environment, as they can be spotted in the most rural of areas, and suburban communities. Raccoons are the ones that really scavenge through trash and left out food, so it is very important to make sure your home and yard are clean.
