What Are Rabid Animals?
Rabies is a virus that can be transmitted by animals to humans. It can be comparable to how we view the common cold or flu, however, it can have much more grave effects. Rabies goes after the central nervous system, by way of the virus traveling through nerve cells. This is why inflammation and swelling occurs and can sometimes be deadly.
The rabies disease affects all kinds of animals throughout Maryland, and all over the world. In fact, there are some areas that are deemed “viral” as they are known for consistently hosting animals who have rabies. When figuring out how to spot an animal with rabies, these are just some of the common ones:
- Foxes
- Skunks
- Raccoons
- Coyotes
It is important to keep a look out for wild animals in general around your home, but it also is important to know the signs of a rabid animal. Knowing what to look for can keep you safe and out of harm’s way. Now, not all animals who have rabies and other diseases are aggressive and foam at the mouth. Some are simply lethargic, much like humans are when we become sick.
How To Spot Them?
With that being said, if you do see an animal with hostile or combative behavior, stay away from it. The most noticeable sign for animals when it comes to rabidness, is the abnormality of behavior. If an animal like a squirrel is willing to come up to you like a pet would, make sure you stay away. In most cases, you’ll want to call a professional in order to have the situation handled properly.
