Snake on Wood Stump

If you have a large yard or live on a decent amount of land, you may have encountered snakes in your yard. While there are people who enjoy their encounters with snakes, many others would rather never see one at all.

The good news is that snakes, just like other creatures, rarely want anything to do with you. It’s just that they’re wild and curious. For that reason, whenever they find favorable conditions, they make it their habitat. A few preventive measures can help keep snakes outside or prevent them from hanging around.

Do Repellents Work?

Before we get into the preventive measures, perhaps, you might be wondering if repellents can keep snakes outside. If you find a snake slithering in your yard or inside your house, your first instinct is to get rid of it. For most people, a chemical repellent could be the first thing that crosses their minds. Typically, a chemical repellent is not the safest thing to use as it could harm other animals or even people.

Therefore, it’s best to stick to repellents that are designed for snakes. But even so, be sure to adhere strictly to the instructions of use. If you’re unsure about the species of snakes you are dealing with, or you’re simply fearing for your safety when dealing with snakes in your yard, you may want to speak with a professional animal control company. Professionals understand the variety of species and how to deal with them safely.

Measures to Keep Snakes Outside

Declutter your yard

If you have stacks of wood, piles of rock, or any other form of debris in your yard, you might be creating a habitat for snakes to live. To make sure you keep snakes outside, you may want to clear out any form of debris and keep the rest of the items tidy and away from any structures.

Keep the grass short

Snakes love staying in tall grass and can go unnoticed for weeks on end. However, they’re unlikely to live in lawns that are well maintained, and if they do, you’ll notice them once they start coming.

Trim your hedges

Snakes, just like other similar creatures, are always in search of food. They are constantly looking for mice, frogs, and other fodder that hide in dense bushes and similar environments. To keep the snakes outside, you will want to keep rodents away by trimming your hedges and keeping them tidy.

Check for gaps and holes in your structure and seal them

Snakes can easily hide in cracks and holes in and around your house. Be sure to check for cracks underneath the doors of your garage, storm shelter, and any other structures on your property. Once you’ve identified small holes and cracks, seal them up to help keep snakes outside.

Fence your property

While there is no sure way of keeping snakes away, when everything fails, fencing can be worth doing. Ensure that you bury your fence a few inches below the ground and use a ¼” or smaller rigid materials.
