Are you curious about the differences between opossums and possums? As wildlife experts at Shumaker’s Animal Control, we understand the confusion surrounding these two similar-sounding creatures. In this blog, we will discuss more about opossums and possums, about their origins, physical characteristics, and behaviors.  You’ll be better prepared to appreciate and coexist with them in their habitats by better comprehending these fascinating marsupials. Let’s get started.

Origins and Geographical Distribution

Opossums: Opossums are local to the Americans and are tracked down in North and South America. They are known for their adaptability and can be found in many habitats, including forests, grasslands, and urban areas. Opossums are the main marsupials situated in the US and Canada.

Possums: Possums are local to Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands. They have effectively adapted to different conditions, from thick rainforests to urban regions. With more than 70 species, possums have become an iconic part of Australian wildlife.

Physical Characteristics

Opossums: Opossums have an unmistakable appearance with long, smooth tails, pointed noses, and round ears. They have opposable thumbs on their rear feet, which help them climb and get a handle on objects. Opossums are mostly more modest, going from 13 to 37 inches long, barring the tail. Their fur varies, including shades of dim, brown, and white.

Possums: Possums have a stockier build than opossums, with a bushy tail that assists them with keeping up with balance while climbing trees. They have a more adjusted face and huge,  rounded ears. Possums can vary depending on the species but are generally larger than opossums. Their fur is predominantly grey, but some species exhibit variations such as brown or black.

Behavior and Habits

Opossums: Opossums are nighttime animals that are generally dynamic around evening time. They are omnivorous, benefiting from a different eating regimen incorporating bugs, natural products, vegetables, small animals, and flesh. Opossums are known for their novel insusceptible framework, as they have a low internal heat level, making them impervious to numerous sicknesses, including rabies. They frequently “pretend to be dead” when undermined by faking obviousness as a defense mechanism.

Possums: Possums are also primarily nocturnal, with some species exhibiting arboreal behavior, spending most of their time in trees. They have a more herbivorous eating diet, benefiting from leaves, flowers, natural products, and, surprisingly, the bark of trees. Unlike opossums, possums do not possess the ability to “play dead” when faced with danger.
