Raccoons are typically known for the black “masks” they have across their eyes which adds to their sneaky reputation. Raccoons are curious animals by nature, so it’s not uncommon for them to find their way in or around your home if they live in your area. Raccoons don’t directly interact with humans often, so there may be a lot you don’t know about them. Here are some interesting facts about raccoons!
Habitat
Raccoons can be found throughout most of North America. Though they prefer heavily wooded areas, they are most often found in cities. Because of this, they’ve adapted to their surroundings and will use pretty much anything to create a den including attics, garages, and sheds.
Diet
The typical diet for a raccoon consists of mostly nuts, fruits, birds, frogs, fish, and insects. However, if the food they desire isn’t available, they will settle for pet food and even garbage. Raccoons are scavengers, so they are not too picky about what they eat.
Because of this, you may find raccoons searching through your trash cans for their next meal. Be sure to secure trash can lids to keep the smell from attracting them to your home.
Mating
On average, raccoons live for 2-3 years in the wild. Their mating season is between the months of January & March and females give birth in April & May. Male raccoons play no part in raising their young and generally have multiple partners during the mating season. A female raccoon can give birth to 3-7 cubs on average.
Raccoons in the Home
If they make their way into your home, you will likely hear them first before you see them. You might hear them scurrying around in your attic or roof. They also produce an array of different sounds including hissing, screeching, purring, growing, and more.
If they’re outside, you’ll hear them knocking over your trash cans to search for food. If you discover raccoons in your home, contact a professional immediately. Raccoons can become very aggressive when they feel threatened, so it’s best to keep contact to a minimum.
