5 Ways to Prevent Squirrel Trespassing In The Garage

Squirrels are not normally the first creatures you think of when it comes to animal problems. These cute and tiny animals might seem innocent but can quickly become a nuisance if left unchecked. Many female squirrels seek shelter in garages or sheds in order to safely have and raise babies. If you want to prevent squirrel trespassing from living in your garage, try these helpful humane methods.

Make Necessary Repairs

The first step in preventing squirrels, and all animals, from entering your garage is by making all the necessary repairs and provisions.

This means fixing any holes in the walls, loose shingles, broken windows, or anything else that might allow squirrels access to the inside of your garage.

Leave the Lights On

Squirrels do not like bright lights in their homes, especially near the entrance. The reason squirrels are drawn to attics and garages is that they are looking for a dark place to stay.

If you place a standard light, or strobe light, in your garage, squirrels will find it highly annoying and be convinced to leave.

Remove Incentives

Many squirrels are drawn to your garage simply for the appeal of food. If you store any food in your garage, make sure they are securely locked away in cabinets. If you store your trash cans in the garage, be sure to keep lids sealed tight.

When a squirrel begins to associate your garage with food, you might have a harder time getting them to stop trespassing.

Turn on the Radio

Squirrels will not stay anywhere they do not feel safe. In order to make your garage an “unsafe area”, try placing a small radio in the garage.

The human voices and loud music will appear threatening to the small creatures. Any threat or potential predator will scare the squirrels away and prevent others from trespassing.

Unwelcome Smells

Similar to the sounds of a predator, mimicking the smells of a predator is another guaranteed way to deter squirrels from your garage.

If you own a cat, try putting a small amount of dirty kitty litter in a plastic bag. Pokes a couple holes in the plastic bag, but not enough to cause spillage. The smell from the kitty litter should be enough to make the squirrels feel unsafe enough to leave.

Squirrels are also known to avoid the strong smells of apple cider vinegar, ammonia, and peppermint. Try placing drops of each solution on cotton balls and spreading them throughout the garage. You can also try soaking a rag with the smell and placing it in a plastic bag, similar to the kitty litter method mentioned above.
