As with any animal or pest, mice have many distinct signs that point to an infestation. Due to their small stature and nocturnal nature, many homeowners might not see the rodents themselves, but rather might notice these prominent signs of mice in your home.

Droppings

Due to similarities, it can be difficult for homeowners to distinguishing mouse droppings from other pest droppings. Mouse droppings are small, usually resembling a dark grain of rice, but they normally appear in groups of 50 to 100.

Droppings are normally found in close proximity to the nests. Kitchen cabinets, closets, attics, and air vents are common places to find droppings during an infestation.

Nests

Although small, mice tend to eat an average of 15 to 20 times a day. Due to this insane eating schedule, mice normally build their nests near sources of food.

In order to build a warm and comfortable nest, mice usually construct their nests using shredded paper, cardboard, or vegetation.

If you notice a small void in the walls or floorboards of your kitchen, there is a good chance a mouse nest hiding in these quiet, enclosed areas. Another prime spot for nests include cluttered garages, unused drawers, or behind kitchen appliances.

Damages

As a member of the rodent family, mice have front teeth that continually grow. In order to keep their teeth from overgrowing, mice will gnaw or chew on anything they can find. Without the constant gnawing, mice would find themselves with front teeth long enough to obstruct the passage of food in their mouths. So, essentially, mice gnaw for survival.

In addition, mice also chew on various materials in order to gain access to shelter, food, and warmth. For example, a mouse can easily chew through wood, plastic, drywall, rubber, and aluminum in order to enter your house and escape predators. Once inside, mice will continue to gnaw through pipes, wires, and anything else that stands between them and a food source.

If you have begun to notice voids around your house, or cut wires, this means a mouse has probably entered your house to nest and is wreaking havoc. This can be especially dangerous if a mouse chews through a gas line, which can cause a gas leak.
