What is Attracting Mice Into My Home?

Keep your home mouse-free with these tips!

Do you have a mice problem in your home? These little furry creatures can quickly become a real nuisance. These animals pose health hazards, and sometimes it can seem impossible to keep them out of your home. If you want to fix your mouse issue, you need to determine why they are coming in your home in the first place. Consider the following attractants, because many of which probably apply to your household!

Availability Of Food

It can certainly be argued that the number one attractant for mice is food. Mice mostly live off a vegetarian diet that consists of oats, seeds, and fruits. However, they will eat just about anything they can get their hands on. In many cases, mice like to dine on foods that are left out in a home and are easily accessible to the mice. This includes items such as cereals, oats, and fruits. It is in your best interest to keep food items in airtight containers wherever possible.

Accessible Trash

Mice love trash. There is simply no better way to put it. They will jump at the opportunity to forage through a person’s garbage for uneaten delectables. As disgusting as it may be for us humans, a trash bin serves as a delicious buffet for mice. We recommend that you keep your trash cans and containers as far away from your home as possible. This way if they want to nibble on your trash, it is not at close proximity to your home.

Crumbs

If you have a reoccurring mice problem, you may want to consider the cleanliness of your home. It is possible that you are leaving more crumbs on the floors and countertops than you realize. Always make an effort to clean your floors on a routine basis. Also, it is a good idea to wipe down your counters and tabletops after meals as well.

No Predators

Mice can easily sense when there are predators present. For this reason, homeowners typically have fewer mice problems if they own a cat. However, it is not a good idea to buy a cat with the sole purpose of fixing your rodent problem.
